Critical Review of Existing and Emerging Approaches to Moderate Upgrading of Extra-Heavy Crudes

This 685-page study, led by Dr. Theo de Bruijn in the year 2000, assessed the scientific and technical basis of existing and emerging heavy oil upgrading technologies at different levels of development. A unique methodology was developed that allowed a holistic techno-economic evaluation of 14 widely disparate upgrading technologies. Eight separate companies invested in the review and received copies of the final report.

Major chapter titles include:
  1. Summary, Challenges and Recommendations

  2. Extra-heavy Crude Versus Light Crudes

  3. Oil Refining

  4. Upgrading Chemistry

  5. Resid Conversion Options

  6. Review of Selected Resid Conversion Technologies

  7. Alternative Upgrading Concepts

Since the initial study’s completion, a revised edition featuring additional alternative technologies was completed for a new client in 2002. If you are interested in buying into this study, please contact Dr. Theo de Bruijn at (780) 987-8710 or e-mail.
