The National Centre for Upgrading Technology is a world leader in heavy oil and bitumen upgrading research. Formed in 1995 as a partnership between the Canadian federal and Alberta provincial government. NCUT is committed to providing science and technology research that will improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the heavy oil upgrading and refining industries. Our research is focused on producing, from bitumen-derived crudes, fuel products that will meet the demands and expectations of Canadians into the 21st Century and beyond.

In addition to our world-class research staff, NCUT has positioned itself witnin a network of superior researchers and scientists at such institutions as the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, and New Brunswick, the Canadian

Light Source in Saskatoon, and the North American Catalysis Society. (For NCUT’s connection to different professional organizations see related links.)

NCUT uses its own expertise, analytical testing and pilot plant facilities to work with oil companies, engineering firms, and technology licensors to solve problems encountered in their processing units and to help them meet GHG and emissions targets. We also act as a conduit between scientists, different research institutions and the private sector to provide the best possible S&T solutions for individual clients.

NCUT has on-going research programs established to help the upgrading and refining industries attain the goals of improved energy efficiency and reduced emissions. Doing business with us is easy, and this site offers you an overview of our capabilities, current research, pilot plants and analytical facilities.
